Essential Tips for Your 30-Day Norwegian Trip:

  • Cost: Norway is notoriously expensive. Budget carefully. Save by using supermarkets for some meals (picnics!), staying in cabins (hytter) or apartments with kitchens, limiting alcohol purchases (expensive, sold via Vinmonopolet), and booking transport in advance. Tap water is excellent.

  • Booking: Book accommodation, flights, long-distance trains, Hurtigruten, popular tours (fjord cruises, Northern Lights), and especially rental cars (essential for Lofoten/Vesterålen) well in advance, particularly for summer travel.

  • Transport: Trains are great between major southern cities. Buses cover extensive routes. Ferries are integral, especially along the coast and for fjord crossings. Flying is necessary to cover the vast distance to the north efficiently. Hurtigruten is a unique coastal voyage option.

  • Packing: Layers, layers, layers! Waterproof and windproof outer layers are essential year-round. Bring comfortable, sturdy walking/hiking shoes (waterproof recommended). Include warmer layers (fleece, wool thermals), hat, gloves even in summer for mountains/north. Sun protection is needed due to reflective water/snow. Eye mask useful for Midnight Sun.

  • Weather: Be prepared for rapid changes, especially in the mountains and fjords. Check forecasts frequently (yr.no is excellent).

  • Allemannsretten (Right to Roam): Similar to Sweden, this allows respectful access to nature for walking, camping (short-term), etc. Always leave no trace.

  • Language: Norwegian is the official language. English proficiency is extremely high throughout the country. Learning basic Norwegian phrases (Hallo, Takk, Ha det) is appreciated.

  • Best Time to Go: June-August offers the best weather for hiking, long daylight (Midnight Sun in the north), but is peak season. May/September offer good shoulder season value, fewer crowds, beautiful colours. December-March is best for Northern Lights and winter activities in the north. Fjord hiking season is generally May/June to September/October depending on snow melt/arrival.

Have an absolutely incredible and unforgettable 30-day adventure exploring the majestic beauty of Norway!
