Essential Tips for Your 30-Day Serbian Trip:

  • Transport: Trains (Srbija Voz) improving on key routes (Belgrade-Novi Sad fast train 'Soko' is excellent). Buses (various companies, check Polazak.com) cover the country extensively and are often practical. Renting a car provides maximum flexibility, especially crucial for Danube Gorge, monasteries, mountains, Devil's Town, Uvac – drive on the RIGHT. Roads vary; highways are good, rural roads can be narrower/poorer. Buy electronic toll tag (ENP) or pay at tolls.

  • Accommodation: Wide range: Hotels, apartments (very common via Booking.com/Airbnb), guesthouses (prenoćište, konačište), hostels, rural ethno-villages (etno selo). Generally very affordable. Book ahead for Belgrade/Novi Sad and popular spots in summer.

  • Language: Serbian is the official language (Slavic language). Uses both Cyrillic and Latin alphabets (Latin increasingly common on road signs/in cities, but Cyrillic dominates officially and in many areas). English is spoken increasingly by younger people and in tourist centers (Belgrade, Novi Sad), but less common elsewhere. Learning basic Serbian phrases and recognizing Cyrillic letters is highly beneficial. Russian/German might be understood by some older people.

  • Currency: Serbian Dinar (RSD). Euro is NOT generally accepted (maybe some tourist spots at poor rates). Cards widely accepted in cities/towns, ATMs common. Carry cash for smaller villages, markets, some guesthouses, taxis, entrance fees.

  • Food & Drink: Hearty, meat-heavy cuisine. Try ćevapi (grilled minced meat sausages), pljeskavica (grilled meat patty), sarma (cabbage rolls), Karađorđeva šnicla (rolled schnitzel), prebranac (baked beans). Grilled meats (roštilj) are everywhere. Rakija (fruit brandy - often homemade, potent!) is ubiquitous. Good local beers (Jelen, Lav) and growing wine scene (Prokupac, Tamjanika grapes). Coffee culture is strong (domaća kafa - Turkish style).

  • Kafana Culture: Traditional taverns are central to social life – expect food, drinks, often live folk music (can be smoky).

  • Safety: Generally safe, especially outside Belgrade. Take standard precautions against petty theft in crowded areas/public transport. Be aware when driving (can be aggressive). Landmines are NOT a concern in tourist areas (confined to specific marked border zones from Yugoslav wars, far from tourist routes).

  • Booking Ahead: Recommended for specific Belgrade museums (Tesla demos), Parliament tour, popular accommodation in peak season, potentially specific train tickets, and essential for organized tours (Uvac, Devil's Town, caves).

Prijatno putovanje! Have an absolutely fantastic 30-day adventure discovering the soul of Serbia!
