The Ultimate 30-Day Vietnam Travel Itinerary

Sunset in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Sunset in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Welcome to Vietnam, a country of staggering sensory contrasts. In 30 days, you will journey the length of this S-shaped nation, descending from the mist-shrouded limestone peaks of the Chinese border down to the sun-drenched beaches of the Gulf of Thailand. You will trade the chaotic, scooter-filled streets of Hanoi for the serene, lantern-lit alleys of Hoi An; swap trekking through the world's largest cave systems for gliding through the floating markets of the Mekong Delta. This 30-day long Vietnam travel itinerary is fueled by world-class street food, rich (and often poignant) history, and breathtaking landscapes.

Vietnam 30-Day Dragon's Trail: From Northern Peaks to Southern Sands

Why This 30-Day Vietnam Guide is Valuable For You

  • The Ultimate North-to-South Arc: Vietnam is geographically long. A 30-day window allows you to do the classic North-to-South (or South-to-North) route without the exhausting, rushed pace that plagues 2-week itineraries.

  • The "Easy Rider" Adventure: This guide includes the legendary Ha Giang Loop in the north, recommending the "Easy Rider" (hiring a local guide to drive the motorbike) option so you get the thrill of the mountains with the safety of a local expert.

  • Caving Capital of the World: This guide dedicates proper time to Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, a jungle-clad region hiding some of the most spectacular, colossal cave systems on the planet.

  • Culinary Deep Dive: From Hanoi’s Bun Cha to Hoi An’s Cao Lau and Saigon’s Banh Mi, the regional pace allows you to truly understand how Vietnamese cuisine shifts as you move south.

  • Smart Transport Logistics: To save you days of sitting on buses, this itinerary utilizes Vietnam’s excellent (and cheap) domestic flight network and classic overnight sleeper trains to cover the vast distances efficiently.

Pacing Legend (R) Relaxing: Cafe culture, beach lounging, boat cruises, slow village walks. (M) Moderate: Temple hopping, market exploration, city walking tours, cycling. (A) Active: Motorbike loops, jungle trekking, caving, steep viewpoint climbs. (T) Travel: Overnight trains, domestic flights, or long bus rides.

Part 1: The Soul of the North (Days 1-4)

💡 Essential Tips for Your 30-Day Vietnam Trip

  • Visas: Most nationalities require an E-Visa. Apply on the official Vietnam government immigration website at least 1-2 weeks before your trip. It is usually valid for 30 days or 90 days.

  • Crossing the Street: Traffic in Hanoi and HCMC is legendary. The secret to crossing the street? Walk slowly, steadily, and predictably. Do not run or make sudden stops. The scooters will flow around you like a river around a rock.

  • Apps to Download: Grab app is essential. It is the Southeast Asian equivalent of Uber for cars, scooters (GrabBike), and food delivery. It saves you from having to haggle with taxis. Download Google Translate with the Vietnamese language downloaded for offline use.

  • Money: Vietnamese Dong (VND). Cash is still king, especially for street food, small markets, and homestays. ATMs are everywhere. When using ATMs, decline the machine's conversion rate and let your home bank do the conversion.

  • Water: Do not drink the tap water. Always use bottled or filtered water, even for brushing your teeth. Ice in major cities and good restaurants is generally safe (it is made centrally in factories), but be cautious with street food ice if you have a sensitive stomach.

  • Weather Variability: Vietnam has three distinct weather zones. When it is dry and hot in the South, it might be freezing and misty in the Northern mountains. Pack in layers! A lightweight rain jacket is a must year-round.

  • Domestic Flights: Vietnam Airlines, VietJet, and Bamboo Airways offer cheap and frequent domestic flights, which are lifesavers for a 30-day trip. Book a few weeks in advance for the best rates.

Chúc chuyến đi vui vẻ! Enjoy the magic, the chaos, and the incredible flavors of Vietnam!
