Għajn Tuffieħa, Mellieha, Malta

Step onto an archipelago where history is carved into honey-colored limestone and surrounded by the deepest Mediterranean blue. Malta is a geographic marvel, a tiny island nation that has served as a cultural crossroads for Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, Normans, British, and the legendary Knights of St. John. In just 7 days, you will transition from 5,000-year-old megalithic temples (older than the Pyramids!) to the opulent, golden-lit streets of Valletta, dive into hidden sea caves, and escape to the slower, pastoral rhythms of the sister island, Gozo, on this Malta travel itinerary.

Malta & Gozo 7-Day Sunlit Odyssey: Knights, Megaliths & Azure Waters

Why This 7-Day Malta Guide is Valuable For You

  • The Complete Archipelago: This itinerary doesn't just stick to the main island. It strategically dedicates time to the rugged, rural beauty of Gozo and the crystal-clear waters of Comino, ensuring you see all three distinct personalities of the nation.

  • Time-Traveling Pace: You will seamlessly weave between eras, from prehistoric Hagar Qim to the medieval "Silent City" of Mdina, and into the Baroque grandeur of Valletta, without feeling historically overwhelmed.

  • Crowd Evasion: Malta gets incredibly busy. This guide emphasizes timing (like hitting the Blue Lagoon early and the Dingli Cliffs at sunset) to maximize your enjoyment and minimize the crush of cruise ship passengers.

  • Culinary Integration: Guides you toward authentic Maltese experiences, ensuring you don't leave without tasting flaky pastizzi, rich rabbit stew (stuffat tal-fenek), and fresh seafood in a traditional fishing village.

  • Smart Logistics: Malta is small, but traffic can be dense. This itinerary groups geographic regions together (South Coast day, Northern Islands days) to minimize your time spent in transit.

Pacing Legend (R) Relaxing: Slow pace, cafe culture, beach lounging, scenic boat rides. (M) Moderate: Heritage walking tours, museum visits, market exploration. (A) Active: Swimming, cliff walking, long days of multi-site exploring. (T) Travel: Ferry crossings or traversing the island.

Essential: Malta’s public bus system is extensive but can be slow. Using ride-sharing apps (Bolt or eCabs) or renting a car offers much more flexibility. Note: They drive on the left side of the road in Malta.

7 Days in Mesmerising Malta: The Travel Itinerary

Expand the structured itinerary below.

Day 1: Arrival & The Golden City (T/M)

  • Arrival: Arrive at Malta International Airport (MLA). Take a taxi or the X4 bus to your accommodation. (Staying in Valletta, Sliema, or St. Julian's are the most popular and connected options).

  • Afternoon: Head straight into Valletta (UNESCO World Heritage Site), the fortress city built "by gentlemen for gentlemen." Walk down Republic Street and Merchant Street, admiring the iconic, colorful enclosed wooden balconies (gallarija).

  • Sunset: Head to the Upper Barrakka Gardens. The panoramic view over the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities as the sun sets and paints the limestone gold is arguably the best view in the Mediterranean.

  • Dinner: Wander the stepped, narrow side streets and enjoy a romantic dinner at a tucked-away bistro. Value: Arriving in one of Europe's most concentrated historical areas.

Day 2: Caravaggio & The Three Cities (M)

  • Morning: Visit St. John’s Co-Cathedral. Do not let the plain exterior fool you; the interior is a jaw-dropping explosion of Baroque gold leaf. Visit the oratory to see Caravaggio’s masterpiece, The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist.

  • Mid-Day: Walk down to the Valletta waterfront and take a traditional Dgħajsa (Maltese water taxi) across the Grand Harbour to The Three Cities (Vittoriosa, Senglea, and Cospicua).

  • Afternoon: Explore Vittoriosa (Birgu). This is where the Knights first settled before building Valletta. Walk the quiet, flower-lined alleys and visit the formidable Fort St. Angelo, which defended the island during the Great Siege of 1565.

  • Evening: Enjoy a harbour-side drink in Birgu before taking the ferry back to Valletta or Sliema. Value: Deep maritime and knightly history without the heavy crowds of the capital.

Day 3: Mdina, Catacombs & Cliffs (M/A)

  • Morning: Drive or take the bus inland to Mdina, Malta’s ancient capital. Known as the "Silent City," no cars (except for residents) are allowed within its high walls. Walk the shaded, winding medieval streets and visit St. Paul's Cathedral. Take in the island views from the bastions.

  • Lunch: Step just outside the gates to neighboring Rabat and grab a cheap, authentic lunch at Crystal Palace (Is-Serkin) - famous island-wide for the best Pastizzi (flaky pastry filled with ricotta or mushy peas).

  • Afternoon: Explore St. Paul’s Catacombs in Rabat, a fascinating underground Roman cemetery complex.

  • Sunset: Drive to the Dingli Cliffs, the highest point in Malta. Walk along the dramatic, plunging coastline as the sun drops into the sea. Value: A leap back to medieval and Roman Malta, ending with natural grandeur.

Day 4: Southern Wonders & Seafood (M/R)

  • Morning: Head south to the Blue Grotto. Take a 20-minute traditional boat ride (weather permitting) through the massive natural sea arches to see the glowing, phosphorescent blue waters within the caves.

  • Mid-Day: Just down the road, visit Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra, megalithic temple complexes overlooking the sea. Older than Stonehenge, their astronomical alignments are mind-boggling.

  • Afternoon: Drive to Marsaxlokk, a traditional fishing village famous for its harbor filled with brightly painted Luzzu boats (adorned with the Eye of Osiris).

  • Dinner: Sit at a waterfront restaurant in Marsaxlokk and order the catch of the day (Lampuki/Mahi-Mahi is a local favorite) paired with a crisp Maltese white wine. Value: Prehistoric mysteries and the island's best seafood.

Day 5: Gozo - The Rustic Escape (A/T)

  • Morning: Drive to Ċirkewwa at the northern tip of Malta and take the 25-minute car/passenger ferry to Gozo, Malta's greener, slower-paced sister island.

  • Sightseeing: Head to the capital, Victoria (Rabat), and climb the heavily fortified Cittadella for 360-degree views of the entire island.

  • Afternoon: Visit the Ġgantija Temples (another incredible UNESCO megalithic site). Then, drive to Dwejra Bay. While the famous Azure Window collapsed in 2017, the area remains spectacular with the Inland Sea, the Fungus Rock, and the Blue Hole (great for swimming/diving).

  • Late Afternoon: Relax at the red sands of Ramla Bay before catching the evening ferry back to the main island. Value: A taste of traditional, rural Mediterranean life.

Day 6: Comino’s Blue Lagoon & Golden Sands (R/A)

  • Early Morning (Crucial!): Take the earliest possible boat (from Ċirkewwa or Sliema) to the tiny, car-free island of Comino. Your destination is the Blue Lagoon, a channel of water so vivid and clear it looks like a swimming pool. Going early is the only way to enjoy it before the party boats and massive crowds arrive at noon.

  • Lunch: Hike 15 minutes away from the Blue Lagoon to the quieter Crystal Lagoon for a more peaceful swim, or grab a pineapple cocktail from a vendor.

  • Afternoon: Head back to the main island and spend the late afternoon relaxing at Golden Bay or Mellieħa Bay (Għadira) - two of Malta’s best sandy beaches on the northwest coast. Value: Postcard-perfect swimming and ultimate Mediterranean relaxation.

Day 7: Last Views & Farewell (R/T)

  • Morning: Enjoy a leisurely breakfast. If you have a late flight and are staying near St. Julian's/Sliema, take a walk along the seaside promenade.

  • Alternative: If you are a movie buff or traveling with kids, make a quick stop at Popeye Village in Anchor Bay (the original 1980 film set, now a quirky theme park with a beautiful swimming bay).

  • Departure: Head to Malta International Airport (MLA) for your flight home, carrying the warmth of the Mediterranean sun with you. Value: A relaxed, stress-free departure.

💡 Essential Tips for Your 7-Day Malta Trip

  • Driving: Malta drives on the LEFT (a legacy of British rule). Roads can be narrow, winding, and local drivers can be assertive. If you aren't comfortable with this, rely on the bus system and ride-hailing apps (Bolt/eCabs are very cheap and reliable here).

  • Water: Tap water is perfectly safe to drink, but it is desalinated seawater and has a heavy mineral/chlorine taste that many visitors dislike. Most people prefer to buy bottled water for drinking.

  • Sun Protection: The sun in Malta is intense, even in spring and autumn. Bring high-SPF sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.

  • Plugs: Malta uses the UK-style 3-pin rectangular plug (Type G), not the standard European 2-pin round plug. Bring an adapter.

  • Language: Both Maltese and English are official languages. Almost everyone speaks fluent English, making it incredibly easy for travelers to get around and ask for recommendations.

  • Beaches: Note that Malta is mostly rocky coastline. The water is incredibly clear, perfect for diving and snorkeling, but if you want sandy beaches, you must head to the North (Golden Bay, Mellieħa) or Gozo (Ramla Bay).

  • Best Time to Go: The shoulder seasons of May-June and September-October are ideal. The sea is warm enough for swimming, but the intense, exhausting heat (and heavy crowds) of July and August are avoided.
