Welcome to the end of the habitable world, or at least, that’s what Manali ("Manu-Alaya," Home of Manu) was considered in ancient mythology. Today, it is a bustling interplay of worlds. On one side of the Manalsu River lies Old Manali, a time capsule of wooden houses, apple orchards, and a laid-back, global traveller vibe. On the other lies New Manali, a chaotic hub of commerce and honeymooners. Beyond them both are the high passes leading to Lahaul and Spiti. This 7-day Manali travel itinerary takes you from the riverbed to the snow line, exploring heritage castles, hidden waterfalls, and the engineering marvels of the high Himalayas.

7 Days in Breathtaking Manali & its Mountains: The Travel Itinerary
Expand the structured itinerary below.
Day 1: Arrival & The Cedar Forest (T/R)
Arrival: Arrive at the private bus stand (Patlikuhal or Manali) after the overnight Volvo ride from Delhi/Chandigarh. You could also take a plane from Delhi to Kullu (Bhuntar Airport). Transfer to your hotel. Recommendation: Stay in Old Manali for atmosphere or near Log Huts Road for quiet luxury.
The Iconic Temple: Walk through the towering Cedar (Deodar) forest to Hadimba Devi Temple. Built in 1553, this wooden pagoda-style temple is the spiritual anchor of the valley.
Lunch: Walk up to Old Manali. Eat at Cafe 1947 or Drifter’s by the Manalsu river.
Evening: Explore the lanes of Old Manali. It feels like a different country with its bohemian shops, tattoo parlors, and live music. Value: Acclimatization and soaking in the "hippie" vibe.
Day 2: Waterfalls & Hot Springs (A/M)
Morning: Cross the Beas river to the village of Vashisht. Visit the ancient Vashisht temple and take a dip in the natural Hot Sulphur Springs (separate baths for men/women). It is incredibly therapeutic.
The Hike: From Vashisht, start the trek to Jogni Waterfalls. It’s a 45-minute scenic hike through apple orchards and pine trees. The waterfall is massive, and you can sit on the rocks and watch rainbows form in the mist.
Evening: Head to Mall Road in New Manali. It’s crowded but essential. Buy local woolens and try a Softie (soft serve ice cream) while people-watching. Value: Nature therapy and local legends.
Day 3: Tunnel to Another World (T/A)
The Drive: Hire a taxi for the day. Drive up the Solang Valley road to the Atal Tunnel. At 9km long, it is an engineering marvel.
The Reveal: As you exit the tunnel, the landscape changes instantly from lush green Manali to the barren, rugged mountains of the Lahaul Valley.
Sissu: Drive to Sissu (North Portal). Visit the Sissu Waterfall and walk by the Chandra River. The scenery here looks like a scene from Iceland or Ladakh.
Return: On the way back, stop at Solang Valley if you want to do paragliding or ATV rides (expect crowds).
Dinner: Try Tibetan cuisine on the Mall Road. Value: Crossing the Pir Panjal range into a trans-Himalayan landscape.
Day 4: The Russian Connection (M)
Morning: Drive 40 mins south to Naggar. This was the ancient capital of Kullu.
Art & History: Visit the Nicholas Roerich Art Gallery. The Russian painter lived here, and his house is preserved as a museum. The views from the garden are some of the best in the valley.
The Castle: Visit Naggar Castle. Built of wood and stone (Kath-Kuni architecture), it withstood the 1905 earthquake. Have lunch at the castle's restaurant on the balcony overlooking the Beas valley.
Dessert: Try a German bakery in Naggar village before heading back. Value: Art, architecture, and the best trout in the valley.
Day 5: The Igloo Village (Sethan) (R/A)
The Journey: Drive to Sethan (Hampta Valley). It is a restricted area (permit required, your driver handles this), located 800m higher than Manali.
The Vibe: Sethan is a tiny Buddhist village. In winter, this is famous for staying in Igloos. In summer/autumn, it is a bouldering and glamping paradise.
Activity: Do the short hike to Pandu Ropa (where the Pandavas supposedly meditated). The view of the Dhauladhar range from here is unobstructed and majestic.
Stay: Spend a night here in a Glamping Dome or a Mudhouse to see the Milky Way clearly. Value: Absolute silence and stargazing.
Day 6: White Water & Shawls (A)
Morning: Return from Sethan and drive down to Kullu (Babeli/Pirdi).
Activity: Go White Water Rafting on the Beas River. The rapids range from Grade II to III. It is chilly, thrilling, and wet.
Shopping: On the way back to Manali, visit a Kullu Shawl Factory. Watch the weavers working on handlooms and buy authentic woolens at factory prices.
Dinner: Treat yourself to a wood-fired pizza at Il Forno in Manali. Value: Adrenaline and authentic craftsmanship.
Day 7: The Last Views (R/T)
Morning: Sleep in or take a walk to the Van Vihar nature park (near Mall Road) to walk among the Deodars one last time. (Early morning walks are the best!)
Food: Have a brunch of Siddu (steamed local bread stuffed with poppy seeds/walnuts) at a local stall.
Departure: Most Volvo buses to Delhi/Chandigarh leave between 4:00 PM and 6:30 PM from the private bus stand, while a flight from Kullu to Delhi departs in the morning hours. Stock up on Himalayan berries, jams, or apple juice for the journey home.
💡 Essential Tips for Your Manali Trip
Transportation: In Manali town, you can walk or take Auto-rickshaws. For Solang, Sissu, and Naggar, you must hire a taxi (Union rates apply and are fixed).
Rohtang Pass: If you specifically want to go to the Rohtang Pass snow point (top of the mountain, not through the tunnel), you need a permit booked online in advance. These are limited and hard to get in peak season (May/June). Make sure you are properly acclimatised before you make this trip as Rohtang Pass lies at an altitude of 13,050 feet (3978 metres).
Packing:
Summer: Light cottons for day, light jacket for night.
Winter: Heavy woolens, thermals, waterproof boots for snow.
Altitude: Sethan and Atal Tunnel are at high altitudes. Drink water and move slowly if you feel dizzy. Avoid a heavy meal before you make this trip.
Food: Try fresh Himalayan Trout (fried or tandoori) in Manali or Naggar. It is a local specialty introduced by the British/Norwegians and is one of the most sought-after dishes by tourists.
Seasons:
Jan-Feb: Snow, skiing, igloos.
May-June: Peak tourist season, pleasant weather, crowded.
Sept-Oct: Best time for autumn colors and clear views.
July-Aug: Heavy monsoon. Be careful of landslides; rafting is usually closed.
Achi yatra ro! Breathe deep, listen to the river, and enjoy the breathtaking Himalayan views around Manali!
