This 7-day Stockholm travel itinerary covers the main city and its surrounding archipelago, including day trips to a UNESCO world heritage site and southern island districts.

Day 1: Arrival & Gamla Stan (T/R)

  • Arrive at Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN). Take the Arlanda Express, airport coach or commuter train to Stockholm Central.

  • Check into your accommodation. Here are some great options for you:

  • Explore Gamla Stan, including Stortorget, Stockholm Cathedral and the narrow historic streets around Västerlånggatan and Österlånggatan. Take a guided tour to cover everything in one go.

  • Visit the Nobel Prize Museum if you're interested in Nobel history. Book entry tickets to skip the line.


Day 2: Royal Palace & Djurgården (M/A)

  • Morning: Visit the Royal Palace, including the Royal Apartments, Treasury or Tre Kronor Museum. Check the schedule for the Changing of the Guard.

  • Afternoon: Head to Djurgården by ferry, tram or bus.

  • Visit the Vasa Museum and see its remarkably preserved 17th-century warship. Book your Vasa Museum tickets and tour.

  • Continue to Skansen, Sweden's open-air museum showcasing Swedish buildings and Nordic wildlife. Pre-book your Skansen tickets to skip the queue.


Day 3: City Exploration & Södermalm (M)

  • Morning: Visit the Stockholm City Hall, including the Blue Hall and Golden Hall.

  • If available, climb the City Hall Tower for panoramic city views.

  • Afternoon: Enjoy the famous Stockholm highlights tour, covering the city's top sights and landmarks from the comfort of a private golf cart.

  • Enjoy fika and a relaxed evening.


Day 4: Drottningholm Palace Day Trip (M/T)

  • Take a day trip to Drottningholm Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and residence of the Swedish royal family.

    • Scenic option: Experience a scenic round-trip on board the M/S Prins Carl Philip, with panoramic views of historic waterfront villas and a freshly prepared warm lunch. Secure your cruise and lunch experience.

    • Faster option: Take the metro to Brommaplan, then continue by local bus.

  • Explore the Palace, Palace Theatre, Chinese Pavilion and surrounding gardens.

  • Return to Stockholm in the afternoon or evening.


Day 5: Explore Museums OR Östermalm (M)

Option A: Museums

  • Choose one or two museums based on your interests:

    • Nationalmuseum (Swedish and European art & design)

    • ABBA Museum (Dedicated to the Swedish pop band)

    • Fotografiska (Photography)

    • Historiska Museet (Swedish history & Vikings)

Option B: Östermalm

  • Explore Östermalms Saluhall for lunch and Swedish food. You may take a culinary tour.

  • Walk through Humlegården and along Strandvägen.

  • Spend the evening around Östermalm or head back towards Gamla Stan.


Day 6: Stockholm Archipelago (T/M)

Option A: Vaxholm

  • Take the archipelago ferry to Vaxholm, around 1-1.5 hours each way.

  • Explore the town, waterfront and Vaxholm Fortress.

  • Stop for lunch or coffee before returning to Stockholm.

  • Book the full day Vaxholm experience here.

Option B: Fjäderholmarna

  • Take the shorter ferry to Fjäderholmarna, around 25-30 minutes from Stockholm.

  • Walk around the islands, browse artisan workshops and enjoy a meal by the water.

  • Return to Stockholm and relax.


Day 7: Fika & Departure (R/T)

  • Check out of your accommodation.

  • Depending on your departure time, I'd say enjoy one last fika if possible.

  • Make your way to Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) by Arlanda Express, airport coach or commuter train. You may book a private transfer for the utmost convenience.

🚇 Transport

SL covers the metro, buses, trams and many local ferries. A 7-day pass is convenient for a week-long stay.

Book popular attractions, City Hall tours, Drottningholm Palace, accommodation and restaurants ahead of time, especially in summer. If you're visiting several paid attractions, compare the Stockholm Pass with individual ticket prices before booking.

Gamla Stan · Södermalm · Norrmalm · Östermalm · Vasastan. Choose based on your preferred atmosphere and access to the T-bana.


💳 Currency

SEK. Sweden is largely cashless, so cards and contactless payments are the norm.


💰 Budget

Stockholm is expensive. Use supermarkets and lunch specials (dagens rätt) to keep food costs manageable.


☕ Fika

Make time for fika - coffee or tea with a Swedish pastry such as kanelbulle or kardemummabulle.


🎒 Packing

Layers, a waterproof/windproof jacket and comfortable walking shoes are your best bet.
